I haven’t shown any miniatures for a while now, so here’s a few that I finished off this past weekend. These are “Offensive Night Goblins” from the German company GameZone Miniatures. One of the best things about painting Orcs & Goblins is that they allow you to do so many chaotic conversions since the entire army concept is based on laughs and insanity. With the exception of possibly the undead, no other army really allows you have as much fun converting the miniatures.

Night Goblins are supposed to be carrying dark robes to ward off the sunlight, as they’re used to living in caves underground. Therefore most people tend to paint their goblins in black, with gray highlights for depth. I wanted to try something different so I went with a purple theme on the robes and instead of the default yellow moon icons, I went with orange for the tip of the standard bearer pole.

I really enjoyed the film Braveheart when I was younger and I can only assume that the designer of these sculpts did as well. In fact, one of my favorite moments of the film was when the Scottish army pulled up their kilts and flashed the English army prior to the charge. Although these fellows have a slighter greener skin tone, perhaps it’s still possible to see the resemblance…

… no? Ah well.

Fantasy and sci-fi writer Elaine Cunningham, author of two of my favorite series Starlight & Shadows and Songs & Swords, not to mention the novel City of Splendors: Waterdeep (co-written with Ed Greenwood), recently made an announcement that would disappoint fans all over the world. At the Candlekeep website and forum (the place to be for Forgotten Realms fans, whether literature or games) Elaine explained the situation regarding the cancellation of the 6th novel in the Songs & Swords series – Reclamation. What is evident in her tone (which no doubt hides much deeper feelings) is a sense of frustration, something deeply personal but also something that is shared by fans and readers all over who have come to love the characters in the series and Elaine’s style of writing. It is a case of writer and reader coming together on an issue, which is a sad yet beautiful thing to behold, as the announcement can mean only one thing: the book cannot be written. The series will not be completed. The story will not be told.

This is what Elaine had to say:

I’ve heard writers far more experienced than I admit that every now and then, they’ll come up against a book that is far more difficult to write than they’d anticipated–including some stories they’re never able to complete. For me, RECLAMATION was one of these problematic stories.

I rewrote the plot several times, changed the scope of the story, dropped characters and subplots and added new ones, changed Elaith Craulnober’s role from a secondary character to a major character, wrote, revised, tossed out, lather-rinse-repeat. Despite all these efforts–and also because of them–I was unable to complete the book before the drop-deadline. After much consideration, the folks at WotC decided to cancel RECLAMATION.

I have absolutely no complaints about the way WotC has handled this situation. If a writer cannot, for any reason, meet a contracted deadline, the publisher has every right to cancel that book.

Yes, I’m disappointed. This story dealt with several issues I would have liked to resolve: the final mystery behind the moonblades, the identity of the child Princess Amnestria bore to Elaith Craunober, the fate of Kymil Nimesin, the royal succession of Evermeet. Elaith needed to face his past and move beyond it one way or another. Danilo needed to move beyond what my friend and current co-writer calls “a walking romantic subplot” and come into his own. Arilyn had residual issues raised by events in the last part of Dream Spheres.

But. With fourth edition around the corner, it just didn’t make sense to push back the release date again. Upcoming 4th edition changes to the Realms will render many of the themes and concerns of this book irrelevant, just as the destruction of Halruaa pretty much guaranteed the irrelevance of the Counselors & Kings trilogy. Also, nine years have elapsed since the release of DREAMSPHERES, the last Songs & Swords book. Nine years. That’s a long, long gap, even in as long-lived a series as Songs & Swords. ELFSHADOW, the first Songs & Swords book, has been in print longer than many FR readers have been alive. All things considered, it’s probably time to move on.

I apologize to readers who have been looking forward to this story and who are disappointed by its cancellation. You have my heartfelt thanks for all your support, kindness, and friendship over the years.

Later on in the discussion thread, she adds that

Last night I couldn’t fall asleep, so I came downstairs and starting reading Writing the Mystery, a writing reference book with articles by many of the top mystery writers. Lawrence Block, whose work I’ve long enjoyed, contributed an interesting article about “ending a story.” He concluded that there were three reasons why he occasionally stalled out:

1) There was something wrong with the story itself. It went off track somewhere, but he just couldn’t figure out where and how.

2) There was nothing wrong with the story, but he just wasn’t able to finish it at that particular time. On more than one occasion, he pulled an abandoned ms out of the file months or years later, read it, and immediately figured out how to procede.

3) There was nothing wrong with the story, but he was having a crisis of confidence and needed to muscle his way past it.

I’m fairly sure I’m facing a Number 1 problem, because I know what a confidence crisis feels like, since I’m obliged to push through them on a regular (weekly? daily?) basis. Maybe someday I’ll wake up at o-dark-thirty sitting bolt upright and exclaiming, “Yeah! That’s EXACTLY what the story needed!” And maybe I’ll finish it to satisfy a personal sense of closure. But barring that if-if scenario, this isn’t a matter of WotC “allowing” publication. If they’d received a finished ms on schedule, they would have published it already.

She brings up a very interesting yet common occurrence in her second post; that of a sense of closure from completing a story. While the relationship between the story and the storyteller (author in this case) is no doubt unique, this feeling of frustration is shared by all readers and fans whenever a story is not told to its finish. Whether it occurs when your parents tells you to go to sleep instead of reading you the final page of the children’s book, or when ABC decided to drop Twin Peaks before the plot was over, if we enjoy a story we will get frustrated if it is not told to its ending. There exists a need in us to achieve that sense of closure, even if the ending is unsatisfactory (like in the case of The O.C); it is still better than no ending at all.

This phenomenon spans across all manner of storytelling mediums, ranging from literature and television shows to computer games and role-playing games. This past year I’ve been involved in a role-playing campaign in the world of Artesia, a campaign with a storyline conclusion planned for the end of the academic year and the beginning of the summer. Suffice to say, we failed to meet that deadline. My character, Cedric de Beanique, served as the teacher and advisor of Freya al Eldrick, daughter of the Baron of Gallos. He was constantly vowing for her full attention and favoritism over the likes of Edwyn, her cowardly instructor and teacher in the fine arts, and the hated Leo, priest and servant of the Divine King. Cedric, as any good teacher, was not without a dark past of his own and soon both accusations of homosexuality and dark occult magic came to follow him wherever he went. Meanwhile Freya gets kidnapped by the brother of her personal guard on behalf of an infamous outlaw, then is rescued and almost ends up in bed with a prince of the realm. Meanwhile university masters are assassinated in what Cedric believes is a plot by the Divine King temple to take the throne of Erid-Dania in order to continue their conquest of the land of Daradja and convert them to their belief.

Unfortunately, this is also where it all ended, for the time being. Personal distractions, philosophical clashes and people moving away prevented us from completing the campaign on time, and when summer time came, we called it quits, unsure if ever we would pick up where we left it. Yet for some reason, most likely the frustration felt between story-lovers to see a story told to its finish, once the summer was over we met and decided that the story must be go on, even if half of the group has left, vital people are moving away, we somehow owe it to ourselves to find out what happens to the characters we have come to love. We may not know exactly how, or even when the story will be told, but just knowing that it will be, someday, satisfies me for the time being.

So when I read the sad news about Elaine’s novel, of the Reclamation that could have been, I raise my glass in salute of all the good stories that went unfinished, never fully told. And I pray that as many of you as possible, one day or the other, find your way to the ending.

Stats from Google Analytics suggests that I recently reached a personal milestone (based on my initial mild expectations) by earning over 50 returning readers – subscribers if you will – of this blog. This is certainly nothing compared to blogs featuring London prostitutes or daily pictures of young, blonde Swedish girls, but the milestone still managed to fill me with a sense of satisfaction. More detailed analysis of the stats suggests that the majority of my readers are re-directed here from facebook links, which suggests most of them are real life friends of mine. A handful of visitors are either British, American or Russian, and are directed here from the Warhammer forums I frequent, suggesting that they are here mostly to see the pictures and reports from my Warhammer hobby. Visitors spend on average about five minutes reading the blog and one in every fourth visitor tend to read other, related blog entries from the blog label menu.

The idea behind the blog came to me while I was finishing my BA dissertation / D-essay a little more than two months ago, and I caught myself thinking: “Hey, writing articles and essays with a mild academic tone on topics that are interesting and useful to me, is actually fun!” and so I decided to have my blog focus on matters that had less to do with my personal life and more to do with my “intellectual life” if there is such a thing – my passions and hobbies, and reflections surrounding them. I’m still pleasantly surprised whenever the topic of my blog comes up in conversations in the pub or in the coffee shop, with people either sending me praise (“I don’t really understand the topics, but the entries are very well-written” is a common one), complaining that the blog contains far too little of my personal life (I still don’t understand why anyone would want to read that, about anyone really) or being genuinely interested in a topic that I brought up and the conclusions that I make. A good friend of mine even went so far as to suggest that my article about the role of tabletop role-play should be considered compulsory reading material for anyone just starting out in our role-playing group. I wouldn’t go that far, but I definitely appreciate the thought. Some also compliment me on my painting, which serves as a great motivator.

No matter your reason for reading this and whether you agree with these opinions or not, the greatest compliment for anyone writing, amateur or professional, is still to be read. So thank you for that. If this nerdy blog ends up getting a hundred subscribers one day, I’ll probably write another post similar to this one.

Today is the 25th birthday of my fiancee, EM or Evamarie. While we rarely buy each other gifts in the conventional sense (what with shared economy and such ruining some of the feeling behind it) I still wanted to do something special for her. So I enlisted the aid of my favorite web comic designer and fellow player turned friend Nhani, author of Beyond the Tree, the misadventures of Hani and Tiny in creating this picture.
In the picture are the two fictional role-play characters that we played together (and apart) in World of Warcraft for over three years. The little one is her character called Gwangwen Fizzledoodle, Gnomeregan survivor, while the tall bearded fellow in the dress is my Dalaran wizard Monos of Three Thunders. They, like us, have been through a lot yet managed to come out smiling on the other side. While neither of them are actively played nowadays, they still hold a special place in our memories and this picture will forever ensure that they remain where they are – walking into the sunset. Simply clicking on the image does not really do the picture justice, instead check out the full size versions to see the detailed facial expressions (links below).

Happy birthday EM, let’s hope I don’t mess up when baking your cake.

Although you probably need to have played D&D in order to fully understand their humoristic nature, anyone who feels that each convention you go to is already packed with people wearing stuff from ThinkGeek should check Monte’s shirts out – they go for a good price as well. Since they’ll be sent from the US, I’d be interested in doing a joint order in case anyone out there is in the market for a nerdy shirt with a very unique feel to it. My favorite is probably the fireball one, although all three are great ideas.

For those of you who don’t know who he is, Monte Cook was one of the designers for the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition, possibly the most popular tabletop RPG ever created, and is nowadays running his own game publishing company called Malhavoc Press. His blog is a good read for anyone interested in how the life of a game writer might look, and every now and then a great source for role-playing tips and hints.

Skuutosh of Da Bloody Tails was mustering his rag-tag bunch of gobbos and practicing how to “keepz quiet so we getz stabba in back!” upon their smaller kin of snotlings, who had been dressed up in human clothing and blindfolded were stumbling around until the gobbos gutted them down. When suddenly, over the shouts and cheers, a rumbling was heard from the trees and the tribe went silent. Out of the forest, riding upon large red and black Darkskull spiders, came crawling another group of goblins, their faces painted white that looked so much like the bones of the dead left in the open. With shrieking voices, they introduced themselves as Da Crawling Death Tribe and claimed that their joining had been foreseen by Kroshok Da Deathcalla, he who was protected by the Spiderwitch of the Forest, and that many foes would fall before the might of their joint tribes. Numb with fear yet excited by the prospect, Skuutosh dared not reject their offer.

These are my spider riders, heavily converted from the same static pose all of them shared before I went to it with a sharp knife. I wanted to create the impression of spiders creeping towards you over rocks and cliffs, as specific rule for spider riders say that they ignore all terrain penalties. Spider riders are fast cavalry, they come in small, cheap units and will be used to bate and distract the enemy while my hard-hitters move in.

I came up with the idea of a jungle-like tribe worshipping small, forgotten deities and as they dress for war they paint their faces white to intimidate their foes. If you look closer you will notice that each goblin has received a unique face paint in an effort to create more individuality while still maintaining the color theme. The fiery red color on the spiders will hopefully not take away from the faces, rather it will add some new things to look out for once the white faces have drawn the eye in. That was at least the intention, not sure if I succeeded.

Cyanide Game Center and Focus Home Interactive released the digital version of the Warhammer Blood Bowl computer game a while ago, with the actual product release being set for next month. Blood Bowl, for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, is originally a board game of American football set in the Warhammer universe, with orcs, elves, dwarves and all the other fantasy races replacing the terrain board of hills and forests on where armies clash in mortal combat, to a stadium where the conflict is settled on the pitch with the inflated pig’s bladder (the ball). It raises an interesting issue, one that I often enough find myself contemplating, which in fan circles is commonly referred to as “raping the lore”.

Blood Bowl is considered a “specialist game”, that is, one of several smaller board games that are not really complements to the normal game of Warhammer, as it’s not truly a hobby the way the regular game is. In a few ways, Blood Bowl is not directly connected to Warhammer, as the concept is not part of the fictional universe that is the Warhammer world – there exists no game of football, or stadiums and players dedicated to it, in the war-ravaged lands of the Old World, where role-play and war gaming are set. While at the same time, these are races that share similar names, appearances and behavior with the races encountered in the Warhammer world, so what gives?

No doubt the idea is sprung out of financial intentions: Warhammer started out as a war game with miniatures that players painted and then played a strategy dice game with. A fictional fantasy universe was created and presented in order to immerse players into the idea, which later sparked numerous of novels and tabletop role-playing games that helped expand on the initial hobby. This is not unique and lots of franchises have done the same (Dungeons & Dragons, World of Warcraft, etc) but Games Workshop also created these specialist board games which catered to a different player type; the competitor whose dominating interest in the hobby lies with game tactics and strategies, who is more concerned with how well the army does in the game than to come up with a fictional background for the troops. The immersionists, which I often write about and consider myself one of, will appreciate the novels and the RPGs because it allows them to immerse themselves into the fictional universe, but will most likely not appreciate games such as Blood Bowl due to its directly immersion-breaking quality – there is no football in Warhammer!

A contrast in taste and the way we play and experience games creates a defining line that separates players who previously easily co-existed in the regular hobby. This may be seen as an argument for the diversity and strength of the Warhammer franchise, being able to cater to many different player types at once, but can also be used as representative of a gaming company who has gone against “what is really Warhammer”, who is ignoring its true fans and is continuing to rape the Warhammer lore in order to earn even more money by constantly expanding, their vision clouded by the almighty dollar (or pound in this instance). The business model is easily detectable, I believe, as it has remained the same since its early beginnings: use the initial core product (the war game hobby) to expand into different mediums, which will make dedicated fans of the core product buy the new products (players who really like the background lore of their army might buy the novels, etc) while at the same time attract new consumers of the core product through the new medium (readers of fantasy literature might get into war gaming from reading a novel set in the fictional universe). Blood Bowl is similar in this way; in fact it will probably reach an even wider audience due to its unique concept. The computer game has the potential to attract players to the core hobby that were previously unreachable; computer gamers who were not quite drawn into the fantasy war gaming concept presented by other Warhammer computer games such as Dawn of War and Warhammer Online might now be swayed to check out the football board game, which is one step closer to collecting miniatures for an army. Not to mention fans of regular American Football and game simulators – traditionally the complete opposite of the gaming geek collecting miniatures – jocks who, entertained by the excess violence and comical characters in Blood Bowl, might take their first step towards finding their inner geek. No matter which, the Warhammer hobby grows and more players is getting into it, for better or worse.

Whether you feel it’s a shame that Games Workshop rapes the Warhammer lore in order to get even more paying customers, or think it’s great that the company keeps finding new, creative ways of getting more players into a hobby that constantly loses players when they grow older and have families, or have an opinion somewhere between those two, it is no denying that Blood Bowl the computer game is looking great from watching the video releases. As a fan of both war games and American sports, I will ignore the immersionist within me who suffers with the true fans, and pick up the game once it is released for some mindless violence, competitive sport and, as always, fictional fantasy.

Writing here has been delayed for several reasons, the most significant one being my mother, who paid her first visit to our flat since we moved here two years ago. She brought with her the usual array of blue collared work ethic which always tend to rub off on my fiancée, who suddenly feels it befitting of her to suggest every single possible way of improving our flat, resulting in that her visit meant a lot of work to be done by me. When we weren’t switching the bedroom with the hobby room, which included dismantling desks, beds and whatnot, we were drilling holes in the walls to hang pictures there or organized the closet space. Now I didn’t particularly mind that but wish we would have been able to show her more of our adopted city, since she certainly does more than enough work on her house back home. Our flat does look amazing though and the room switch certainly paid off, as it means less sunshine in the bedroom during mornings and evenings, and allows for far better ventilation in the hobby room where I spend most of my time writing during the day. Not to mention that we have all the books in one place. The collection has grown to span an entire wall, which is pleasing in its own right. If I keep this up I should have an entire room filled with books before I turn fifty (one of my many goals in life). Still, rumor has it Ed Greenwood has collected over 10 000 books in his home, which certainly makes my single wall of fantasy novels look tiny in comparison.

The Swedish Pirate Party announced recently that they would partake in the election for a select number of local government boards in Sweden, which is good news as it means that the information-political perspective is expanding. The Pirate Party UK
was recently registered as a vote able option, which is dearly needed there, as £400 million will be spent installing over 2000 CCTV cameras in the homes of private British citizens and over 1500 surveillance requests are made every day to access private e-mails and telephone records in the UK. As much as it frustrates me to see the current Swedish government pass yet another law that limits the personal integrity of its citizens – most recently the idea was of keeping a register for every woman that went through with an abortion – the problem is definitely an international one.

Big Brother certainly seems to be watching us.

Look busy.

Skuutosh, leader of the Red Tail Tribe, realized that despite his considerable bulk and might (for a goblin that is) tribe leaders rarely lasted long in their position considering the scheming ways of their sneaky kin. Not fully trusting even the seemingly most loyal of his shamans, he traveled into the lower tunnels of the World’s Edge Mountains in search of a loyal beastie to smash into submission, hopefully a dragon. Unfortunately (or perhaps luckily) he found no dragon, instead he stumbled down a filthy cavern complex that held a stench worse than an old snotling, even if it had crawled up into the dross pit and died there. Within he came upon a small “family” (a group which has not yet killed and eaten one another) of trolls, who (after realizing that he was outnumbered) Skuutosh convinced into joining his growing force, with promises of offal and stunty extremities. Skuutosh then returned to the surface and the waiting Waaagh! without having defeated a dragon, but pleased that he had found a personal bodyguard to ensure his survival. At least for another day.

The three trolls have each been painted with slightly altered color schemes. They were all basecoated with Scaly Green but with different highlights inspired by Warhammer Online, where all trolls seem to come in different variations of green with no single troll looking quite like the other. It made the painting more interesting, after finishing so many goblins of much the same color I was happy to add some diversity to the army. They weren’t converted very much, aside from a slightly altered pose on the one with the stone sledge, as I thought they looked fine as they were.

Trolls, for those of you unfamiliar with the specifics of Warhammer and Orcs & Goblins in particular, are fear-causing beasties who regenerate wounds caused but they also suffer from stupidity. That is, they might scare the enemy into running away from them, they save wounds on a +4 of a D6 no matter what hurt them (as long as it isn’t fire) but they also have to roll a leadership check each turn to avoid standing still in confusion, unable to do anything. I will most likely employ them as a “hammer” unit for a hook or anvil & hammer tactic, that is use them as a strong-hitting charge into the flank of the enemy, with a goblin boss on a wolf urging them on.
